About This Venue
Theresienwiese—often simply called “die Wiesn”—is a vast open space in the heart of Munich and the world-famous home of the Oktoberfest. Spanning over 40 hectares, it transforms each year into a vibrant festival ground that attracts millions of visitors from across the globe.
Outside of Oktoberfest season, the area is a quiet, expansive public field used for recreation, events, and occasional festivals. But once autumn arrives, it becomes the epicenter of Bavarian culture: massive beer tents, amusement rides, traditional food stalls, and lively crowds create a unique atmosphere that blends heritage with celebration.
The site is named after Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, in whose honor the original celebration was held in 1810—an event that eventually evolved into today’s Oktoberfest. At the southern end stands the Bavaria statue, overlooking the grounds as a symbol of regional pride and tradition.
Easily accessible by Munich’s public transport system, Theresienwiese is not just a location—it’s a cultural landmark that represents one of Germany’s most iconic and enduring celebrations.
